Documentary: Heart of Coffee, Las Chumecas

On Christmas 2019, we went to the village of Buenos Aires, Guaimaca, to give out Christmas baskets and celebrate the holiday seasons with the school kids and their family. We were lucky to have a filmmaker join us in this special occasion. She used this opportunity to make a short documentary on the coffee community we support and the friends who have been helping us to achieve our dreams from day one, Pedro Aguilar and Yessenia Aguilar.

Honduras is the largest coffee producer in Central America; sixth in the world. Thousands of coffee workers work day and night to support themselves and their family. Nevertheless, with all the hard work, living is still hard for them due to the decrease of coffee prices, climate change, pests, lack of government support and many other factors. The Aguilar couple have been silently helping their coffee community even before collaborating with RuLin; fixing roads, providing professional trainings, creating jobs for the community. With RuLin, we were able to help the community further by putting emphasis on education and youths.

“Through this documentary I want to share a small portion of the couple's story and a topic that I grew up with— coffee. Maybe next time, we will be more conscious of the sacrifices it takes to produce the cup of coffee we drink every morning, which extends much further than what my camera could ever capture.”
